Just 90 miles south of the Arctic Circle, Fairbanks is known as the "golden heart" of Alaska. Founded on the banks of the Chena River in 1901, the town's colorful gold-rush history comes to life in its working gold mines and on the riverboat cruise.
Shopping includes gold nugget jewelry and Native handicrafts from the Interior, such as beaded slippers and gloves, birch-bark baskets and porcupine quill jewelry.
Stunningly beautiful and rich in wildlife, Denali National Park consists of six million acres of coniferous forest and open tundra. Looming high above the valleys is the 20,320 ft. Mount McKinley, commonly known as Denali, meaning literally, "The High One". It is the highest peak in North America. If you are fortunate enough to be there on a clear day, you can expect to see Dall sheep high on the hillsides and grizzlies fishing for salmon in the icy-cold streams of the park.
Whittier, Alaska is located at the head of Passage Canal in Prince William Sound, 75 scenic miles southeast of Anchorage. Whittier lies to the northeast shore of the Kenai Peninsula and to the west of Prince William Sound.
Established as a strategic military facility during the Second World War, Whittier's ice-free port remains a focal point for marine activity and freight transfer from sea train barges serving South-central Alaska.
Stretching over 90 miles long and covering over 1,350 square miles in area, Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America. It is also one of the most impressive, a 300-foot wall of ice rising sheer and jagged from the ocean. You may hear the rumble and see the monumental splash as the glacier severs into great ice chunks, known as "calves."
Preserved as a National Monument, Glacier Bay exists as an extraordinary collection of glaciers in a contained region. Only two ships per day are permitted to enter the bay during the summer months, which is when whales come here to feed. Hundreds of years ago, the ice in Glacier Bay fell as snow on the icefields in the mountains above.
Compressed by its own tremendous weight, the ice slowly flows through valleys to the sea, where in some cases, it breaks off in great chunks, called "calves", to float free as icebergs and "bergy bits".
Skagway was born during the great Klondike gold rush. Those were the days when Skagway had 80 saloons and was known as "the roughest town on earth". The city's rip-roaring past will come alive when you walk down Broadway, a main street so authentic it is part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park!
Accessible only by air or sea, Alaska's capital is surprisingly urban and cultured for such a remote destination. When you arrive by sea, you will be greeted dockside by numerous flags and an abundance of summer flowers. For further insight into the Inuit culture and crafts, visit the museum. Take the short drive to Mendenhall Glacier, the only glacier inside city limits! Take a helicopter ride for an amazing aerial view of Juneau and area, or go fishing for silver salmon. Then, just kick back and relax with a cool one at the famous and colorful Red Dog Saloon.
Ketchikan is the salmon capital of the world. The canneries are busy and the stream below Creek Street's rustic boardwalk bustles with life. Visit the ancient grove of Totem Bight, the largest collection of authentic totem poles anywhere. Make a flight to nearby Misty Fjords--a breathtaking vista of Alaska's unspoiled wilderness and America's newest national monument; or try a little salmon fishing.
In Vancouver, you never lose sight of the spectacular mountains or the glimmering sea. It is a prosperous city, with flowers adorning the streets and the lush greenery of Stanley Park, the third-largest urban park in the world, beckoning to travellers and locals alike. Museums offer fine collections of dramatic Northwest Native arts. Vancouver's Chinatown is the second largest in the world. Princess Fun Zone Activities for kids are divided into two age groups: "Princess Pelicans" (ages 3-7) and "Princess Pirateers" (ages 8-12). On all Vessels except Royal, Tahitian and Pacific Princess you'll find completely equipped Youth Centers.
Princess Pelicans and Princess Pirateers are entertained with such activities as: Arts and crafts, movies and cartoons, video games, scavenger hunts, afternoon ice cream parties, backstage galley tours, Hall of Fame tournaments, discos, exclusive kids-only dining, Edu-tainment programs, karaoke and lip-sync shows, pizza parties, shipboard olympics, pajama parties and t-shirt coloring.
Off Limits Teen Center - Princess' astounding Teen Centers are packed with Nintendo, movies, Karaoke, giant screen TVs, card games, board games, ping pong tables and juke boxes. In addition to all these features, on Grand and Golden Princess, teens have a separate Jacuzzi and sun deck area made just for them. Please note that the Royal, Pacific, and Tahitian Princess do not have dedicated Teen Centers.
Edu-tainment - Scheduled on select seasonal sailings, the California Science Center, will deliver entertaining interactive science activities for children aboard Princess ships. Whale watching, coral reef studies, building and racing sailboats, marine biology studies and squid dissection are just some of the new activities that may be offered.
Kid sitting & port day activities - Youth and Teen Centers onboard Grand, Golden, Star, Sea, Ocean, Dawn, Sun, Coral, Island, Diamond and Regal Princess offer complimentary scheduled activities to youth passengers ages 3 to 17 from 8:00am to 5:00pm while in port. A special supervised complimentary lunch service is also available with parental consent.
