— Today, Cruise Holidays, North America’s
oldest and largest cruise-specialty retail franchise,
presented its “Community Service Award”
to Kirk Olson of Cruise
Holidays of Vancouver, BC, for his work supporting
the Sandra Schmirler Foundation. Exemplary service and
commitment to a group, organization or community, during
the past year, is required to receive this award. Olson
was honored during the 2008 Cruise Holidays Annual Convention
which is being held aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines’
Norwegian Pearl.
Olson is a member of the Vancouver Curling Club and
was familiar with the foundation created as a legacy
to 3-time world curling champion and Olympic gold medalist
Sandra Schmirler. The foundation’s mission is
“caring for babies in crisis.” Olson and
Cruise Holidays of Vancouver organized and hosted a
lunch aboard a Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam
to raise funds benefiting neonatal intensive care unit
(NICU) facilities across Canada. Twelve Cruise
Holidays of Vancouver staff members were on hand
to lead small groups on tours of the ship and then host
a table at lunch. The nominal fee charged for this fundraising
event brought in over $2,500 for the Sandra Schmirler
Foundation.
“We are so encouraged when anyone within the
Cruise Holidays organization puts forth this much care
and hard work for a worthy charitable organization,”
said Peter D. Thomson, Vice President and COO of Cruise
Holidays. “Kirk’s personal connection to
this organization and his passion for cruising melded
perfectly, and all for the benefit of premature infants
in need.”
